Celebrity Big Brother returns on Channel 5

In the end she got Jedward, David Hasselhoff’s ex-wife and a gypsy bare knuckle boxer who last made the news when he had an ear bitten off outside a Manchester branch of PC World.
The wife of House of Commons Speaker John Bercow was officially unveiled as one of the 10 ‘celebrity’ housemates as the reality television show kicked off. She introduced herself as “the ex-alcoholic who posed in a bedsheet” and admitted that her husband was “not exactly chuffed” by her decision to enter the house.

In addition to former X Factor contestants Jedward (otherwise known as John and Edward Grimes), Pamela Bach Hasselhoff and My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding star Paddy Doherty, the line-up features Amy Childs from The Only Way Is Essex, a male model called Bobby Sabel, teenage Waterloo Road actor Lucien Laviscount, paparazzi boss Darryn Lyons, American Pie actress Tara Reid and reality TV fixture Kerry Katona.

For the next three weeks, they will live under the 24-hour gaze of the Big Brother cameras. And for the first time since George Galloway destroyed his political credibility by pretending to be a cat on Rula Lenska’s lap, MPs will find themselves tuning in to the show.

Mrs Bercow, who refers to herself as “the Carla Bruni of British politics”, is known for embarrassing her husband. She posed naked but for a sheet in a magazine article whilst discussing how “sexy” she found it to live in the shadow of Big Ben, and has spoken frankly about past binge drinking and sexual exploits.

She explained to the Big Brother audience that she is married to “the one who goes ‘order, order'” and said: “I don’t like it when he tries to get me into order. And the fact I’m on here shows that he doesn’t succeed.
“Because I’m married to the Speaker I have to behave a certain way? Well, sorry – no.

“I’m an individual in my own right and I’m not my husband. I kind of want to stick two fingers up to the Establishment who think it’s not the kind of thing I should do.”
Mrs Bercow said she plans “to stir it up a bit” in the house.

Rob Wilson, the Tory MP, believes Mrs Bercow’s participation in the show is undignified. “John Bercow said he wanted to restore respect and dignity to Parliament in his manifesto for Speaker. I am not sure how Sally Bercow going on one of the country’s tackiest show helps.”

Although she is donating £100,000 to charity, Mrs Bercow is also being paid a reported £40,000 to appear on the show and has retained the services of publicist Max Clifford. She hopes to develop a broadcasting career after leaving the house.

Channel 4 killed off Big Brother after 11 series but it has a new lease of life on Channel 5. Brian Dowling, a former Big Brother winner, has replaced Davina McCall as host.
